Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Fly vice
  • Spool
  • Bobbin
  • Bobbin loader
  • Hook
  • Pliers
  1. Step 1

Load the bobbin with a spool of thread by either using a bobbin loader or by pushing the thread into the bobbin tube and sucking it through until it comes out of the top.

  2. Step 2

Select an appropriately sized hook for the fly you want to tie and attach it to your hook vice. To tie flies, your hook should be secured to your vice so that the hook shaft is even with your work surface. The actual hook should be held tightly in the hook vice.

  3. Step 3

Use a pair of pliers to remove the barbs from your hook. To do this, flatten the end of the hook by applying pressure with your pliers. You can purchase specific pliers created for fly fishing, but any small pair of pliers should work.

  4. Step 4

Place your bobbin on the hook shank, closest to the hook. Attach materials to the hook shank by holding your material in place with one hand while you wrap it by turning the bobbin. This secures your materials under the thread with the right amount of tension, determined by the weight of the bobbin you select and the type of fly you are tying.
