Things You'll Need:
- Fly vice
- Pliers
- Hook
- Lead-free wire
-
Step 1
Secure your hook to a fly vice so that the shank of the hook is perpendicular to your work surface and the hook itself is held in the vice grips.
-
Step 2
Use a pair of pliers to remove the barbs from the hook. You can achieve this by flattening the hook with the pliers for a smoother edge. You can purchase specialty pliers made just for fly fishing ties or you can use a small pair you already have.
-
Step 3
Break off enough lead-free wire to wrap several times around the hook shank. This type of wire can be found at any fishing or sporting good store.
-
Step 4
Begin at the front of the hook shank. Bend one end over the hook and pinch it tightly to the hook shank with your fingers.
-
Step 5
Wrap the hook shank tightly, keeping each new loop around the hook shank snuggled tightly up against the previous loop. Coil the lead-free wire around entire length of the hook shank, then cut the excess wire.
-
Step 6
Use your thumbs to push the end of the wire firmly against the hook shank so it doesn't catch on anything. Press firmly enough to make the edges as inconspicuous as possible.
-
Step 7
Push the loops together from both ends to make a seamless weight on the hook shank. Your fly is now ready for deep fishing.
