Fly fishing is a relaxing form of outdoor recreation, unless you don't set up the reel and fly rod correctly. It can then become aggravating as you will get plenty of tangles and line breakage which may result in lost fish. Follow these steps to learn how to set up the reel on a fly rod before you head out to go fishing.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Thread the spool with the backer. If you are using a closed cage spool then you will need to pass the backer through the opening in the cage. If you are using an open cage then you must detach the spool and tie on the backer.

  2. Step 2

Attach fly line to your backing using an Albright knot to connect the two together, pulling continuously to tighten it. Attach a leader to the fly line using a leader butt knot. Use nippers to trim the knots as neatly as possible without damaging them.

  3. Step 3

Secure the reel to the fly rod. Unscrew the cap at the end of the fly rod. Place the reel against the fly rod and screw it tightly.

  4. Step 4

Pull and loop your line. Thread it through the eyelets on the fly rod. Looping the line prevents it from slipping through all the eyelets if you drop it.

  5. Step 5

Tie the fly onto your leader. Use an Albright knot to secure the fly. Be sure to lubricate the knot with saliva before tightening to prevent breakage.
