How to Use a Clinch Knot to Tie the Fly to the Tippet

A fishing fly is almost always tied to the lightest leader of a fishing line (the tippet) with a clinch knot. This knot is so-named because it "clinches" in on itself when tightened and is secure even with very light and smooth line. The following steps will show how to use a clinch knot to tie the fly to the tippet.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Insert about 6 inches of the working end of the tippet through the eye hook of the fly and make about five turns around its standing end. This is usually done by turning the eye hook rather than wrapping the tippet.

  2. Step 2

Push the working end through the loop around the eye hook of the fly. It should go in from the "top" of the loop where the wrap is on top of the standing end. It may be necessary to pinch this loop open because you are typically working with light line.

  3. Step 3

Make an improved clinch knot by bringing the working end back through the loop thus created. This should be done only if the extra security is needed because a well-dressed clinch knot is actually stronger than an imperfectly tied improved clinch knot.

  4. Step 4

Dress the clinch knot. Wet the line to lubricate it and pull the standing end against the fly while ensuring the wraps are snug to each other and do not overlap. The working end of the tippet should be held with the fly but not pulled.

  5. Step 5

Trim the working end very close to the clinch knot once it has been tightened completely because any excess line will produce drag and extra weight.
