Things You'll Need:
- Fly rod
- Fishing line
- Fly
-
Step 1
Take hold of the fly rod as if you were shaking hands with someone. For right-handed fishermen, the left hand is the control hand and the right is the casting hand. The reverse is true for left-handed individuals.
-
Step 2
Thread the fishing line through your rod. Pull 10 to 20 feet of line out of the reel and place it on the ground. Tie your fly onto the line if you like, however for practice, you don't need a lure on your line.
-
Step 3
Cast your rod perpendicular to your body, while you're facing the target. Stand with feet a shoulder width apart and keep your body from swaying while you cast.
-
Step 4
Make a loop with your line by sweeping the fly rod back to the 2 o'clock position. Stopping suddenly in this position forces the fishing line to shoot behind you. Always check for trees and obstructions before casting, so you don't catch a tree branch.
-
Step 5
Observe your line as it straightens out. When the line is in a horizontal position move your rod forward 45 degrees (or a 10 o'clock angle) and stop. Your line shouldn't touch the ground.
-
Step 6
Keep from breaking your wrist by placing your forearm and arm tight to your chest. Give your line time to make its loop. Pull the line out from your control hand to achieve distance.
