Things You'll Need:
- Clippers
-
Step 1
Take the end of the tippet in one hand and the end of the leader in the other. Overlap about 6 inches of the two lines together.
-
Step 2
Make a loop with the overlapped lines about 2 inches in diameter and pinch it at the base where the lines cross between the thumb and index finger of one hand so the loop is upright. The tag end and standing line of the leader trails from one side of your thumb and the tag end and standing line of the tippet trails from the other.
-
Step 3
Grab the long part of the tippet (the standing line) with your other hand and pull the entire length through the loop. Repeat this move two more times, so that you wind the tippet around the perimeter of the loop three times.
-
Step 4
Pick up the tag end of the leader and pass it through the loop. Repeat twice, so the end of the leader is also wound around the perimeter of the loop three times. Grab the tag end of the leader and the standing end of the leader together with your free hand.
-
Step 5
Moisten the loop by putting it into your mouth. Release the loop from your fingers and grab the tag end and the standing end of the tippet together with that hand. Moistening the loop lubricates the monofilament and allows the line to slide smoothly during the next step.
-
Step 6
Pull your hands away from each other while holding the two pieces of each line together. This pulls the loop down into a tight, secure blood knot. When the knot is snug, take your clippers and cut off the tag ends about 1/8 inch from the knot on each side to keep the knot from snagging as it passes through your rod guides.
