Attaching the fly to the tippet or leader of your fly line requires learning to tie an improved clinch knot. This knot holds the fly securely while letting it float freely for a natural, realistic presentation fish will go for. The improved clinch knot is easy to learn if you follow these simple steps.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Clippers
  1. Step 1

Hold the tippet or leader in one hand and hold the fly along the body with the other so the eye of the hook is visible.

  2. Step 2

Pass the end of the line through the eye of fly's hook and pull about 6 inches through the eye.

  3. Step 3

Grasp the tag end (the short end) and standing line (the end that leads back to your rod) together between your index finger and thumb, forming a loop about 3 inches long.

  4. Step 4

Twirl the fly around eight times so the loop winds around itself.

  5. Step 5

Thread the tag end of the line through the loop just ahead of the eye of the hook. This creates a second loop.

  6. Step 6

Bring the end of the line through the second loop.

  7. Step 7

Moisten the loops with your mouth. This lubricates the line and lets it slide easily. Pull the knot tight until it is snug up against the eye of the hook. Trim the tag end with your clippers to about 1/8 inch from the knot.

Tips & Warnings
  • You may need to trim some of the hackles away from the eye of the hook to pass the line through it easily.
