How to Fly a Delta Kite

A delta kite consists of a basic, stable design that performs well in light to moderate winds. You won't need a kite tail because of its stabilizing keel but you can add streamers for effect. A delta kite is fun to fly--not only for a beginner but also for those more advanced who can even make it perform a few simple tricks. Read on to learn how to fly a delta kite.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose an open spot free from obstructions such as trees, overhead lines and other kites. Lay your delta kite belly up on the ground, toward the upwind side of your flying field.

    • 2

Unwind 30 or 40 feet of line, walking downwind away from the kite. Pull gently on the string, until you see the nose lift off the ground. You should feel tautness in your line and a bit of wind pressure against the kite.

    • 3

Launch the kite by taking one or two long steps backward. As the kite lifts off the ground, give it a sharp tug, pulling downward on the line. In a gentle wind, you may have to take a few more steps back and continue working the string until the kite has a steady lift.

    • 4

Release more line slowly to let your kite fly higher. If it begins to falter, pull down and back on your line, pumping it to make it rise again.

    • 5

Play with your kite. Even a single line delta can do a few tricks. Take a step forward and let the kite tilt to the side. When it angles left, step back and pull on the line. Your kite will fly toward the left. As it angles up again, let off until it tilts right, then pull it across the sky to the right. Have fun with it.

Tips & Warnings

  • Attach your line to the top hole in the keel for strong wind, the bottom one for lighter winds.

  • Add tails for stability in stronger winds. Keep the tails balanced--one on the center or two of equal length from the wing spars.
