Flickering fluorescent lights drive people batty. If your light tube is out or flickering, you can troubleshoot and repair it easily. Follow these steps and tips to fix or replace a fluorescent light.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Remove the cover of the light fixture, if there is one, exposing the tubes (bulbs) inside.

  2. Step 2

Check to see if the bulb is loose where it connects to the light fixture. Wiggle it a little and it may come back on.

  3. Step 3

Note if the ends of the tube are very discolored. A little discoloration is normal, but a very dark area suggests you need to replace the tube even if it has not gone completely out. Flickering or almost burned out tubes place a strain on the remainder of the fluorescent light fixture components.

  4. Step 4

Turn off the switch that controls the light fixture.

  5. Step 5

Rotate the ends of the tube until you can slide one of the electrodes out the slot where they plug into the fixture, if you need to replace it.

  6. Step 6

Install the new one by sliding one of the prongs into the slot on each end, then rotate the tube to slide the other prong into place.

  7. Step 7

Flip on the switch and let there be light.

Tips & Warnings
  • If the light fixture has two tubes, go ahead and replace both at the same time even if one is still working. It will fail soon, and you'll be up on the ladder again.
  • If changing the bulbs doesn't fix the problem, then suspect a starter or ballast problem.
  • Take care not to break the fluorescent tubes you are handling as you fix or replace your light. Dispose of them in accordance with local codes. They are considered hazardous waste in some places.
  • Use ladder safety rules if you use a ladder to reach your light.
