Step 1
Grasp the arm of the violin with your left hand. Make sure the front is facing away from you so the palm of your hand is resting underneath the strings.
-
Step 2
Lift the fiddle so the chin rest lies underneath the left side of your jaw. For the most comfort, attach a shoulder rest to the bottom of your fiddle so the fiddle can be supported comfortably by your shoulder.
-
Step 3
Allow your fingers to curl around the top of the arm and the tips of your fingers rest comfortably on the strings. Bend your wrist outward as much as possible while playing the fiddle because it will make it easier for you to reach all the notes.
-
Step 4
Hold the bow lightly in your right hand between your thumb and fingers. Keep your wrist loose.
-
Step 5
Place the end of the fiddle down on your chest as an alternative way of holding the fiddle. The fiddle will need to rest along your upper arm, and your wrist will have to be bent slightly inward to do this. You can't reach as many notes this way, but it's a more comfortable position for square dance callers or those who sing while playing.
