Chai tea is not a new drink. In fact, it is the name for regular tea in several parts of the world and the tradition of drinking chai tea is centuries old, especially in India. As Chai tea grows popular in the west, the Chai tea latte is a soothing drink made from scratch or using a chai mixture. Below are instructions for both methods, each resulting in a great cup of chai.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 1 1/2 inches of cinnamon stick
  • 1 1/2 cups of water
  • 8 cardamom pods
  • 1/4 inch ginger root, thinly sliced
  • Oregon chai
  • 2/3 cup milk
  • 6 tsp. sugar
  • 3 tsp. Darjeeling tea leaves
  • Sieve
  • Espresso machine
  1. Step 1

Create the chai tea mix by bringing to a boil in a medium pan the cinnamon stick, water, cardamom and ginger root and simmer for 10 minutes. If you have store bought chai tea mix, Oregon chai mix is best, get it out of the cupboard and skip to Step 5.

  2. Step 2

Add milk and sugar to chai mixture and simmer for another minute or so to give the sugar time to sweeten the mix.

  3. Step 3

Place the Darjeeling tea leaves in the pot before removing from heat.

  4. Step 4

Let chai mix steep for three minutes then strain using a kitchen sieve.

  5. Step 5

Fill a cup, the size of which is up to you, just over half full with chai mix or chai tea.

  6. Step 6

Pour milk to about 1/2 inch from the top of the cup. The milk will expand during the steaming process and this gap ensures the mixture will fit in the cup after steaming.

  7. Step 7

Place the prepared mixture into a pitcher and steam using the steaming setting on an espresso machine. Enjoy your chai latte.
