How to Use Perfboard to Build an Electronic Circuit for Your Project
Perfboard is a thin sheet of non-conductive material, such as fiberglass, of phenol resins that is used for making circuit prototypes. It has holes drilled at regular intervals to allow for the attachment of electronic components and may be plated with copper or other conductive metal. The following steps will show how to use perfboard to build an electronic circuit for your project.

1
Obtain the correct perfboard for your project. Most home projects use perfboard with holes at 0.1-inch intervals while 1-mm intervals would be more suited for microelectronics. Perfboard with solder pads around the holes on one side is preferred.
-
2
Lay out and test the circuit to ensure it is working correctly on a test board. When the size of the circuit has been established, cut the perfboard to the appropriate size and shape.

-
3
Insert the leads on the components through the holes in the perfboard in the desired layout pattern. If your perfboard has solder pads, you will attach the components on that side.
-
4
Twist the leads of the components together to ensure a good mechanical connection. Test your circuit once again to ensure it performs as expected.
-
5
Solder the leads together to make a permanent electrical connection. If the perfboard is plated you must first scrape the plating off of the bottom where you do not want a connection. Trim the leads close to the solder points to make a clean finished circuit.
