Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Line up your right sides of the fabric together and pin them in place along the top. Position your zipper over the fabric to measure where it begins and where it ends.

  2. Step 2

Place a pin in the fabric to let you know where it ends and another to let you know where it begins.

  3. Step 3

Set your sewing machine to the straight stitch setting and sew in a 4.5-inch stitch length from one side to the other. You'll only need to do about a 1/2-inch base stitch on each side.

  4. Step 4

Remove the pins and stick your zipper in from the backside. Then secure the zipper to the fabric with a few pins.

  5. Step 5

Turn your piece over to the right side and make sure the teeth of the zipper line up perfectly against the seam.

  6. Step 6

Carefully take out the pins from the back and secure them to the front of your piece. Be sure to take a peek at the back every now and then to make sure your zipper teeth are lined up. Stitch the zipper to your piece back-tacking the ends to make them sturdier.

Tips & Warnings
  • You're using a basing stitch to position your zipper in your bag so you don't need back-tack to secure your stitching.
  • Make sure the zipper pull is facing upwards.
