Distributor caps, in automobiles that have them, eventually have to be removed and replaced. A distributor cap is plastic, and over time heat and vibration can cause it to crack. Distributor caps can also fail due to carbon deposit build up and eroded terminals.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Locate the distributor cap. Consult your owner's manual for quick and easy access to your distributor cap.

  2. Step 2

Clear a path to the distributor cap by removing any part that is obstructing removal. Removal of air filters or disconnecting certain hoses may be required.

  3. Step 3

Loosen the cap by removing mounting screws, clamps or hooks. Release the caps spring loaded latches with half turns.

  4. Step 4

Unplug the coil from the wiring harness and unscrew and remove it. Some models have remote mounted coils and will not require re-wiring.

  5. Step 5

Remove the wires from the distributor cap taking note of their placement.

  6. Step 6

Move the coil and wires from the old cap to the new one and insert the wires into the correct slots.

  7. Step 7

Transfer the spark plug wires one at a time from the old cap to the corresponding terminals on the new cap. Replace the coil cover, reconnect the wire plug and attach the new cap to the distributor.

Tips & Warnings
  • Purchase a new distributor cap at your local auto supply store. Bring the make and model of your vehicle with you for easy look up.
  • Purchase a good repair manual for older model cars for all do-it-yourself repairs. With the proper tools and guide book doing minor repairs yourself can save you lots of money.
