Ignition cables are connected to the distributor cap and will need to be removed in order to inspect and maintain the distributor cap or other parts connected to the ignition system. Using proper safety precautions are important when working with any of the vehicle's electrical system. Read on to learn how to remove an ignition cable.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Locate the ignition cables. These are at the end of the spark plug wire connected to the distributor cap. There will be as many of them as your engine has cylinders. They are often black and rubber.

  2. Step 2

Pull each wire straight out from the distributor cap, one at a time. Pull only the rubber boot during removal. Check for corrosion and that each boot fits tightly, just as you would have checked the spark plug wire.

  3. Step 3

Install new ignition cables, if there is excessive corrosion. You can purchase a new set, which will be dependent on your engine model. If you are unsure of the engine model, ask your auto parts store associate for assistance.

  4. Step 4

Remove and replace the wires one at a time to avoid mixing up the firing order. Check how each wire is routed before removing and replacing. Wire routing is extremely important. If the firing order is mixed up, the car will either not run at all or will run extremely rough.

Tips & Warnings
  • To avoid mixing up the firing order, mark each cable with a piece of masking tape and write a number that corresponds with positioning of the cable on the distributor.
