Fresh lime wedges are an essential part of many cocktails, such as a gin and tonic or a Margerita. They also add a festive touch to other drinks, such as a Cosmopolitan or a rum and coke. Cutting lime wedges is easy if you follow these steps.

From Quick Guide: Cocktail 101
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Wash the limes. Like any fruit, wash the exterior of the limes gently under running water to remove any dirt or bacteria.

  2. Step 2

Assemble your equipment. To cut lime wedges, you'll need a sharp, paring knife and a medium-sized, plastic cutting board.

  3. Step 3

Halve and quarter the limes. To make lime wedges, first cut the lime in half. Next, lay the juicy side down on the cutting board and cut each half in half again, lengthwise. Then, carefully, cut each quarter in half, lengthwise, so that you have eight pieces.

  4. Step 4

Score the limes. Take each lime wedge and carefully cut a slice in the middle of the juicy side, ending about half way to the rind.

  5. Step 5

Garnish the cocktails. Garnish cocktails, such as a vodka and tonic, with a lime wedge by placing the scored lime on the rim of the glass. You can also run the wedge all the way around the glass first to give the drink a lime flavor.

  6. Step 6

Store unused, cut limes in the refrigerator. Store limes in a non-metallic container, covered with plastic wrap. Cut limes generally keep in the refrigerator for three to four days.

Tips & Warnings
  • When washing the limes, discard any fruit that is soft or has brown spots on it. These are spoiled.
  • When scoring the limes, be careful not to cut all the way to the rind.
