Step 1
Section off the hair. Having the hair in sections helps you keep perception of the length. Divide in four sections: the right side, the left side the back and the top.
-
Step 2
Cut the sides of the hair. Comb 1-inch sections and hold between fingers vertically, keeping the fingers parallel to the head. Cut just below the fingers.
-
Step 3
Trim the back of the hair. Comb the hair in 1-inch sections away from the head, and cut vertically parallel to the head.
-
Step 4
Move to the top of the head. Comb the hair straight up in 1-inch sections, and cut just above the fingers. Men generally prefer hair a little longer on the top than on the sides.
-
Step 5
Blend the sides from the back to the top. Move along the edges of the section where the top meets the sides and back. Compare the edges to make sure they are the same length, and snip where necessary.
-
Step 6
Texture the hair with a razor. This helps hair lay nicely and all the ends blend together perfectly. Run a razor along the length of the hair towards the ends.
-
Step 7
Use thinning shears to manipulate the way the hair falls. Shears should only be used for very thick hair that needs some of its bulk removed. Separate the area to be thinned into 1-inch section. Run the shears along the length of the hair starting at least 1/4-inch from the scalp.
