Anyone that has ever had a perm or was lucky enough to be born with curly hair has one problem in common: tangles. Detangling curly hair can be a lengthy, painful process. The steps below will assist in making the task a little more manageable.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Wet hair thoroughly. Apply a light leave-in conditioner to the hair length. Make sure to avoid applying conditioner on the scalp.

  2. Step 2

Use fingers to comb through hair to untangle knots and mats.

  3. Step 3

Divide the hair into sections. Use a wide tooth comb to start combing at the bottom of the hair section. Slowly work up the section of hair to the scalp. Be patient and take time to ensure hair will not be damaged by excessive pulling or tugging.

  4. Step 4

Dip comb directly into conditioner if some areas are harder to detangle. Sometimes it is helpful to comb the tangle out under the shower spray for added detangling power.

  5. Step 5

Rinse hair with cool water to close the hair cuticle. Do not wash out all of the conditioner. Leaving a small amount of conditioner in the hair will help protect the hair from tangles until the next wash.

  6. Step 6

Purchase a detangling spray as a backup method. Spray hair and comb thoroughly. Work hair from the bottom up and do not force the comb through the hair. If the tangle is stubborn, apply more spray.

Tips & Warnings
  • Do not use a brush to detangle curly hair. A brush is very harsh and will break and frizz the hair.
  • Never try to detangle dry hair. The hair will frizz and break if not wet enough.
