A scarf can be made with rows of single crochet stitches, and it will serve its function very nicely. It will also be very plain, however, so a crocheter will often experiment with specialty stitches, forming designs or textures. Read on to learn how to do a specialty stitch when making a scarf.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Yarn
  • Crochet hook
  • Row counter
  • Scissors
  • Yarn needle
  1. Step 1

Try alternating the single stitch with the double and triple stitches in a regular pattern.

  2. Step 2

Work your stitches in the back loops only of the previous row to form a horizontal line. Turn and work in the front loops only to form a line in the next row or work in the back loops again to form lines in every other row.

  3. Step 3

Chain one or more times after turning and work single stitches in every other stitch to form an open weave. On the next row work a single stitch in each stitch and under each chain.

  4. Step 4

Insert your hook between stitches from front to back before the stitch and then from back to front before the next stitch to form a pattern of vertical lines. On the next row, insert your hook from back to front and then front to back.

  5. Step 5

Begin a new color at the end of the row by dropping the yarn and yarning over with the new color. Leave a tail of 4 inches in each color to weave in later.

Tips & Warnings
  • Because a scarf consists of short rows, if you don't like the specialty stitches you've tried, you can simply pull them out and start again.
