Crochet instructions rarely explain the most important part of crocheting--how to get started. Fortunately, it's very easy, requiring a simple slip knot placed over the crochet hook and holding the yarn the right way with the left hand. Here's how to get started crocheting a slip knot in a scarf.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Yarn
  • Crochet hook
  1. Step 1

Make a loop several inches from the end of the yarn and place the end of the yarn strand next to the strand on the other side of the loop.

  2. Step 2

Reach through the loop with your right thumb and forefinger. Grab the two strands of yarn and pull them through the loop.

  3. Step 3

Pull the knot snug, leaving the loop large.

  4. Step 4

Hold the crochet hook in your right hand as if it were a pencil, with the hook to the left. Another method is to hold the hook as if it were a knife.

  5. Step 5

Slide the loop over your crochet hook and pull on the end of the yarn until the loop is snug but not tight.

  6. Step 6

Hook the little finger of your right hand around the yarn between the hook and the skein and lay the yarn against your palm.

  7. Step 7

Turn your hand over and place the yarn over the top of your index finger. Use your middle finger and thumb to hold it near your crochet hook.

Tips & Warnings
  • Your index and little fingers control the tension of the yarn so your stitches will be neat and even. For just enough tension to hold the yarn in the right position to grab with the hook, adjust the position of your index finger. If more tension is needed, hold the yarn more firmly with your little finger.
