A scarf is a great first project if you're just learning how to crochet. Crochet has many different stitches and each produces a desired look. The double crochet stitch is very versatile because it creates a "holey" look, and the double crochet stitch is great for making "lacy" stitches. Practice the basic steps of this stitch and you can make a double crochet stitch scarf.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Create a slip knot and place it onto your hook. Create a chain stitch totaling the number of stitches your pattern calls for.

  2. Step 2

Wrap the yarn around the front of the hook. Don't wrap it in a circle around the entire hook, just cross the yarn over the front.

  3. Step 3

Push the hook through the chain stitch. Wrap the yarn again around the hook, which is called a "yarn over."

  4. Step 4

Pull the yarn through the stitch. You will now have three loops on the hook.

  5. Step 5

Repeat the steps for making a double crochet stitch until you reach the end of your first row. Add three chain stitches at the end of the row before turning your work to start the second row of stitches.

Tips & Warnings
  • Don't forget to crochet three extra chain stitches for your turning chain when you start a new row of double stitches.
  • The double crochet stitch is a good stitch for making a scarf. You're making more progress with each stitch that you crochet and you will see the scarf progress quickly.
