Wrap the yarn around the front of the hook. Don't wrap it in a circle around the entire hook, just cross the yarn over the front.

Push the hook through the chain stitch. Wrap the yarn again around the hook, which is called a "yarn over."

Pull the yarn through the stitch. You will now have three loops on the hook.

Repeat the steps for making a double crochet stitch until you reach the end of your first row. Add three chain stitches at the end of the row before turning your work to start the second row of stitches.
