A beanie hat is any hat that is round on the top and moves straight down the sides. Unlike in knitting, where you start with the bottom of the hat and work your way up to the top, when you crochet a beanie, you start at the top and work down. Here's how you can crochet the top of a beanie hat.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Yarn
  • Crochet needle
  1. Step 1

Use your crochet hook to chain three stitches and join them into a circle. Once you have your three stitches, join them by pushing your crochet needle through the first stitch and single crochet.

  2. Step 2

Make one row of single crochet. In this row, you will not increase stitches. Instead, crochet each new stitch in a unique stitch on the row below.

  3. Step 3

Increase the top of your beanie hat. To increase, crochet two single crochets into one stitch below. Do this for each stitch below. This will double the number of stitches per row in your hat thus far.

  4. Step 4

Continue increasing each row until your piece has expanded to a size that looks as if it would easily fit over the top of your head. This part of the beanie is called the crown of the hat. When the crown is complete, you can start decreasing stitches to work on bottom half of your hat.

Tips & Warnings
  • The label on your package of yarn should tell you what size needle to use. If you have never worked with this kind of yarn before, the package's needle recommendation is a good place to start.
