Building a coil pot is the simplest form of pottery and one of the best ways to begin learning about pottery. Although constructing a coil pot can be done many different ways, there are some basic steps that you should follow for the best results.

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Roll out a coil from a piece of clay. This can be done by rolling a small lump of clay between your hands and a smooth surface until it's about as thick as a pencil. Spread your hands and apply even pressure for consistent results.

  2. Step 2

Construct a base by coiling one piece around itself until it is a circle.

  3. Step 3

Add more coils to the base to build your coil pot. Keep stacking the coils around the edge of the base, one on top of another, until you satisfied with the height of your pot.

  4. Step 4

Smooth the inside of the pot with your fingers so that you force the coils to mold together. Rub the coils into each other until you have a smooth surface.

  5. Step 5

Level the top by gently turning the piece over and tapping it lightly. Make sure you do this on a flat surface.

  6. Step 6

Dry the piece slowly before firing, glazing or painting it. If the pot is forced to dry too quickly the spots between the coils can crack.

Tips & Warnings
  • When smoothing the inside of your coil pot, hold it gently on the outside with one hand to prevent it from warping.
