How to Clean Stainless Steel in Your Kitchen

Stainless steel can be found in most kitchens. Refrigerators, dishwashers, stoves, sinks, small appliances, counter tops and even trash cans are all available in stainless steel. It is an extremely durable product, but it can stain. Also, stainless steel is notorious for showing fingerprints. Follow these easy steps to keep your stainless steel shiny.

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

    Consult your owner's manual for directions and warnings on how to clean stainless steel.

  2. Step 2

    Wipe the area to be cleaned with a damp cloth to remove stains and fingerprints.

  3. Step 3

    Spot clean areas that don't come clean with a cotton ball moistened with rubbing alcohol or acetone. Window cleaner can also be used to remove fingerprints.

  4. Step 4

    Use a stainless steel cleaner if stains or fingerprints are still visible.

  5. Step 5

    Rinse the area with clean water and towel dry to prevent spots.

  6. Step 6

    Polish your stainless steel by using a paper towel with vegetable oil on it. Rub in the direction of the polish lines.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can make a paste of baking soda and liquid dish soap to treat stains. Rub it one the affected area and then rinse and towel dry.
  • Water can spot your stainless steel. Make sure to towel dry to prevent spots.
  • Do not use bleach or cleaners containing bleach on stainless steel.
  • Keep all cleaning products stored securely out of the reach of children.
  • Stainless steel can scratch. Do not use abrasive sponges or brushes.
