As new technology embraces digital sound solutions, tube amps are only one option for amplification, but if your guitar amp uses tubes, you may have to replace one of these old parts to get better sound, as replacing pre-amp tubes is part of routine maintenance on some models. Read on to learn how to change pre-amp tubes on guitar amps.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Make sure you have the right parts. Different makes and different years are not usually compatible. Don't take a chance, take a look at the tube standards usually printed on the interior of your amp and get what you need.

  2. Step 2

Get inside the amp cover. Most of the tube amps have a back cover that you can easily unscrew or otherwise remove.

  3. Step 3

Locate your pre-amp tubes. The pre-amp tubes are generally near contact switches. They are smaller than other tubes in the amplifier.

  4. Step 4

Unscrew any tube covers. Some of the pre-amp tubes on amp models are covered by metal shields that can be unscrewed to access the tube itself.

  5. Step 5

Remove the old tube by gently wiggling it until the various small prongs come away from their housings.

  6. Step 6

Notice where gaps in the prong structures are to make sure you insert the new pre-amp tube in the same direction as you removed the old one.

  7. Step 7

Insert the new tube, cover it up, and replace the amp hood.

Tips & Warnings
  • Be careful to only work on the internal stuff inside your amp with the power off. Turn off the amp and unplug it before opening. You should also give it time to cool off in case some parts are heated during use.
