Chainsaws are handy tools for many homeowner jobs, including cutting firewood. They can be cantankerous to start. You need to know your machine and follow some basic safety rules. So read the operation manual that came with your Husqvarna chainsaw and follow these steps to start it.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Safety goggles or full face shield
  • Hardhat
  • Cut resistant gloves
  • Ear muffs or plugs
  • First aid kit
  • Fire extinguisher
  1. Step 1

Keep your Husqvarna chainsaw in peak running condition. Have it tuned up and ensure you use the correct oil to gasoline mixture so it will start more easily.

  2. Step 2

Wear proper personal protective equipment--hearing protection is a must, along with goggles or a full face shield and hard hat. Safety steel-toed boots are optional, but a good idea.

  3. Step 3

Set your chainsaw on a hard, flat surface where the bar is clear of everything--weeds, rocks, dirt, trees, pets or little children and other people.

  4. Step 4

Engage the chain brake, pull the choke out and push the decompression valve button, place the kill switch in the "on" position and press the air purge button to get the fuel started. Lock the throttle control open.

  5. Step 5

Place your right toe through the opening in the rear handle of the Husqvarna chainsaw and take a firm hold of the guide handle on top with your left hand. You can kneel on your right knee, if you want, or bend over slightly and pull the starter cord with your right hand sharply in succession until the engine starts to fire.

  6. Step 6

Push in quickly on the choke and release the throttle lock as the engine begins to start. Reset the chain brake by pulling it back toward the guide handle.

Tips & Warnings
  • Keep hold of the pull rope handle until the rope is recoiled into the machine to keep it from flying into the chain or hitting your body.
  • Always have a first aid safety kit nearby when starting and using a chainsaw.
  • Never attempt to start a chainsaw indoors.
  • Never hold the saw at waist height and drop it down while holding the pull cord to start. Always place the saw on the ground to start.
