The most important step in measuring your basement floor for ceramic tile installation is to find the exact center of the room, because the first run of ceramic tile must be started from the true center of your floor. Working from the true center is essential to ensure that your tile placement is aligned with the walls of your basement. Here's how to measure your basement floor for ceramic tile installation.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

Step1
Locate the exact center of each wall and make a mark at that center spot.
Step2
Set up a chalk line running from the center spots of two facing walls, and snap it on the floor.
Step3
Repeat Step 2 on the other two facing walls, to make a chalk line between their center spots. The exact center of the room will be marked by a point at which the two lines cross each other.
Step4
Check for accuracy. From the center spot, measure 3 feet in along one of the chalk lines, and make a mark. Measure 4 feet from the center spot along the second chalk line and make another mark. Measure the distance across from the 3-foot mark to the 4-foot mark. When the two are measured from a true center, the distance between the two marks will be exactly 5 feet. If this is not the case, you will need to re-measure and re-chalk each wall to ensure a quality finish.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you are working in a room that has irregularities, just ignore these when measuring the walls.
