One of the first things learned when playing the cello is open scales. Open scales are scales that begin with notes played open on one of the strings. Once you memorize these scales and can play them smoothly and quickly, it is time to move onto some simple songs.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Begin with an open C scale. It begins with a C note, played on the C string, which is the first one.

  2. Step 2

Go into the first finger position with the thumb on the C string. The first finger position is about two inches below the peg box. This produces a D.

  3. Step 3

Do the third finger position on the C string to produce an E, followed by an F with the fourth finger.

  4. Step 4

Move on in the scale with an open G on the G string. Use the first finger on this string for an A. Use the third finger for a B.

  5. Step 5

End the scale with a high C. Play a C with your fourth finger on the G string. This C is a whole octave higher than the first one played.

  6. Step 6

Try an open G scale in the same manner beginning with an open G on the G string. Continue through the scale with the same note progressions until you end with a high G.

  7. Step 7

Play an open D scale also, beginning with an open D on the D string. Continue up the scale using the same fingerings as listed above to play the notes until you end with a high D.
