How to Test Car Lights

The lights on your car make you visible to other drivers at nighttime. It is very important that they function properly. It is important to test your car lights to make sure all lights are working correctly. Read on to learn how to test car lights.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Get into your car in the driver's seat. Have another person stand in front of your car. Turn your car on so you can test all of the lights.

  2. Step 2

    Turn on the headlights of the car. The other person can nod his head if they are working or shake "no" if they are not.

  3. Step 3

    Check the turn signals. First right turn signal and then left and wait for your friend to respond.

  4. Step 4

    Test the high beams. Make sure they are working properly. High beams are very important at night when there can be very limited visibility.

  5. Step 5

    Request that your friend move to the back of the car. Once there turn on the taillights and wait for a response.

  6. Step 6

    Step on the brake to check the brake lights. Observe your friends response. Check each turn signal to make sure they are working front and back.

  7. Step 7

    Put your car in reverse to test the back up lights. Make sure your foot is firmly on the brake when you put your car in gear.

Tips & Warnings
  • Some cars have specialty lights, like fog lights. Make sure to check these lights as well, if your car came equipped with them.
