Detailing your engine is part of a good car maintenance routine. Dirt and grime build-up mixed with the heat generated by the engine can cause a car's engine components to deteriorate which can lead to costly repairs. Experts recommend detailing your car's engine every two months.

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Remove any loose debris. This can be done manually or by using an air compressor to gently blow the debris off of the engine.

  2. Step 2

Cover any computer or electronic components with plastic bags. Most computer and electronic components are in casings that are water resistant. Covering them just gives them more protection.

  3. Step 3

Wet the engine using a regular garden hose. The water pressure should be light, not pressurized. If the water pressure is too high, water may penetrate into the engine and cause costly repairs.

  4. Step 4

Spray an engine degreaser on the engine. Allow the engine degreaser to soak on the engine according to manufacturer directions. Be sure to immediately wipe off any engine degreaser that comes in contact with any painted surface.

  5. Step 5

Brush any noticeably dirty areas using a paint brush. Use gentle sweeping motions. Vigorous scrubbing may cause damage.

  6. Step 6

Rinse the engine using a regular garden hose. Be sure to completely rinse off the engine degreaser.

  7. Step 7

Dry the engine using an air compressor. Follow this up by drying any remaining wet areas using a towel.

Tips & Warnings
  • In most areas, it is illegal to allow oil to run into a drain or onto the ground. If your engine is oily, spray degreaser on a towel and wipe the oil off. Dispose of your oily towel according to local laws.
  • Check your owner's manual for specific information on detailing the engine. Some car manufacturers do not recommend wetting the engine block and some will instruct you on exactly what should be protected while detailing your car engine.
