The capoeira move of au chibata launches your feet into a spinning kick while keeping your face and body closed to counter-attack. The move takes skill, practice and flexibility, but once you have it down it proves effective in capoeira transitions and fighting situations that require you to kick from a ground position. Follow these steps to do au chibata.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Squat down onto the balls of your feet and get your balance. Extend your right leg to a near full extension but leave a slight bend in the knee so the outside of your thigh faces the ground and your heel and side of your foot support you.

  2. Step 2

Plant your right hand on the ground next your right upper thigh. Bring your left arm up and over you as if you're about to throw your body sideways into a modified cartwheel.

  3. Step 3

Cartwheel over by planting your left hand across your body (past your extended right foot, next to your planted right hand) and then kicking your squatting left leg out from under you and over in a cartwheel like motion. Allow your rib cage to fall and rest on your planted left elbow and upper arm so you can leverage your legs around you to turn 180 degrees.

  4. Step 4

Drop your right hand back to the ground after the cartwheel motion and then land on your right foot with your knee bent. Bring your left foot back to the ground and either return to the au chibata starting position or into the capoeira ready stance.
