Au batido is one of the central moves of capoeira. The move serves as a foundation on which you can build other, more complex capoeira moves. Additionally, you'll find that au batido can transform into a powerful kick and that it is virtually identical to a popular breakdancing movement. Follow these steps to do au batido.

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Warm up and stretch. Au batido, like most capoeira moves, places a good deal of strain on your legs and inner thighs since it throws the weight of your lower body into the air. Warm your legs up and then do a thorough stretch so you can improve the chances of completing the move and prevent any injury.

  2. Step 2

Plant your hand. The first move is to go into a cartwheel like motion. Instead of following through with the cartwheel and planting your second hand, leave only your first hand on the ground and let your legs come up to your side.

  3. Step 3

Twist your hips. As your lower half gets into the air, twist your hips so you can kick the leg on the opposite side of your planted hand out in front of you. This prevents you from going over sideways into a one-handed cartwheel.

  4. Step 4

Split your legs. After you kick your leg out in front of you try to balance your two legs against each other so you can stay in the au batido position for as long as possible. This improves your balance and control over the movement.

  5. Step 5

Go back the way you came. To finish the move your legs should go in the same path that they took to get into the au batido. Snap your legs back towards the floor and keep them straight so that you land standing up and not in a crouched position.
