The left uppercut is a powerful punch in boxing that uses the force of your left arm to throw a hard punch that is difficult to defend against. Proper technique, good form and attention to your guard can amplify the power and precision of the left uppercut. Follow these steps to throw a left uppercut in boxing.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Get into position. Bring your right hand up and slightly to the side of your head so you have some defense of your face and right side of your chest as you throw the uppercut. Move your left leg forward and shift your weight so that most of it (but not all) rests on that forward leg.

  2. Step 2

Dip into the punch to maximize its power. Rotate your hips slightly left and bend your torso at the waist down and to the left. Bend your left knee a little as you do this to help you get underneath the uppercut for greater power against your boxing opponent.

  3. Step 3

Punch up. Throw the left uppercut from the bottom of your dip. Get your arm an inch or two away from your body and throw the punch from the shoulder with a slightly bent elbow. As you throw the punch, twist your left shoulder in towards your boxing target so that you can leverage your body into the punch.

  4. Step 4

Bring your left hand back. Since the left uppercut leaves your left side relatively open to a counterattack it's very important that you bring your left hand back to your guarded stance as soon as you can. If you want to use the uppercut in a combo then bring the left hand back and follow it with a right jab or hook.
