When you're faced with a 2, 4, 5, 8 spare to pick up, it's a tough decision with a couple of choices. You can go for the head pin with a pretty good chance of leaving the 8 in the back, or approach from a side angle to make contact with all four pins.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Increase the target size by starting your bowling approach standing over slightly to the right of the alley, instead of in the middle.

  2. Step 2

Aim the ball between the 2 and 5 pins to make contact with both pins before heading toward the back pin. This is the same area you use when aiming for a strike between the 1 and 3 pins.

  3. Step 3

Use a lot of force to give the ball a heavier velocity, or use a heavier ball. The heavier the ball, the better chance it continues through the lane to hit the back 8 pin.

  4. Step 4

Pick a straight on aim towards the 2 pin if you think you'll miss the pins, otherwise aim dead on. Note you're taking a risk because the ball most likely makes contact with the front three pins and roll away from the 8.

  5. Step 5

Keep your approach, swing and delivery consistent. The key to picking up spares on a regular basis is consistency.

Tips & Warnings
  • This spare is an easier pick up for a bowler with a right hook that comes in from the side to make contact with all the pins.
