The difference between the casual bowler and the one who starts winning tournaments, is a bowler who knows how to pick up a spare. Here are some tips on how to get the spare when you're stuck with a nasty five-ten split.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Adjust your body so that you are in a straight line with the left side of the five pin. Since the five pin is in the middle of the lane, you want to create the straightest path to the ball and send it screaming toward the ten pin in the right corner. This means that if you are left-handed, you must shift slightly right from the center dot. If you are right-handed, you must shift slightly left from the center dot.

  2. Step 2

Focus in on the left side of the five pin. If you hit the five pin straight on or on the right, the pin will not take out the ten on the right corner. Concentrate on the edge of the pin so the ball can "kiss" it and send it across to the ten.

  3. Step 3

Make your approach to the lane. This is up to the individual player. Some people have one step approaches while others take as many as eight. The rule of thumb is you must feel comfortable.

  4. Step 4

Release the ball and pick up the spare. Be sure to keep your wrist straight when you bowl, otherwise the ball will react sharply and you'll find yourself quickly in the gutter. Master picking up spares in bowling before moving onto more advanced techniques like hook bowling. (Where you add spin to your release of the ball.)

Tips & Warnings
  • Practice bowling with a friend who is working solely on strikes. If he misses, step right up and clean-up his mess by getting a spare. It's a great way to prepare for tournament situations.
