Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Know what a hip jump is. The hip is any place where the ramp angles into a point. Hip jumps are jumps where the bmx bike passes over the hip. Skate parks are full of hips where the ramps change direction. Basically, you'll take off on one angle and come down at a totally different angle so you have to reposition in the air.
Step2
Gage your speed. There are so many varieties of hip jumps that you can go very slow on some, like lifting the bike gently in a bunny hop or for higher jumps you can generate a lot of speed and really pop it. How fast you go will depend upon the jump's steepness, how much pop you need to get over the lip and your own skills at propelling yourself.
Step3
Stay relaxed. Keep your muscles loose on the bike. If your muscles tense up, you're reflexes won't be as sharp and you won't let the bike just ride the jump out smoothly.
Step4
Work the angles. For a loose angle hip jump, carve it like carving cheese in a nice floating motion. For a tighter angle, get your body and bike right where you want it fast. Make sure that both wheels are close to the coping when you land.
Step5
Get your body in the right position. Jump straight. Then immediately lean toward the angle of the hip. Lean toward where your front tire is going to land on the next angle, changing your direction in the air with your body. Turn the handlebars. Point your head in the direction you want your bike to go.
