How to Do an Ice Pick BMX Trick

If you're up for trying some tricks on that new BMX bike, then learning to do an ice pick is a good place to start. This simple freestyle maneuver is done by stalling your rear peg on a flat surface. If you don't have a ramp, you can do it on a 2 to 3 foot wall. You'll need to catch some air with a bunnyhop before trying this stunt, so you can actually practice two tricks at the same time.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Set up the ice pick by starting with a bunnyhop. A bunnyhop is simply coming up off the ground without a ramp or jump. Get a running start and pick up the front of your bike with your upper body and the rear of the bike with your legs.

  2. Step 2

Complete the bunnyhop. Get your bike high enough in the air so that you can land on the wall or surface you're using for your trick.

  3. Step 3

Land on the surface using just your rear peg and hang there for a second. This stall is your ice pick.

  4. Step 4

Hop back down by leaning your body away from the wall. Use the bunnyhop trick with your legs controlling the rear of the bike to help you get down.

Tips & Warnings
  • When stalling on the wall, your front wheel should be in the air the whole time.
  • Don't stay on the wall too long as the longer you stall, the harder it will be to hop off.
  • Always wear a helmet when you do BMX tricks, and if you're a novice rider, wear some gloves and knee pads, too.
