How to Do the Bunny Hop on a BMX Bike

BMX bike tricks make bicycling with your friends fun and increase your riding skills at the same time. Learning to do the Bunny Hop creates a foundation you can build on to do even more extensive and elaborate bike tricks.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Begin this trick as you would begin to pop a wheelie. Shift your weight to slightly behind your seat and crouch forward.

  2. Step 2

    Lean back and jerk your handle bars toward your chest, lifting the front wheel of your BMX bike off of the ground first.

  3. Step 3

    Clench your thighs tightly and pull your back wheel off of the ground while leaning forward. This will propel your bike forward and your front tire down. Once your front tire hits the ground, you can allow the back tire to come down as well.

  4. Step 4

    Practice this process. In the beginning, you will not hop very high into the air. Perfect the technique, then focus on increasing your air and the distance you are able to bunny hop your bike.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure you are fully comfortable with this skill before you attempt to do any skills that are based on the Bunny Hop, such as a 180.
  • Always wear protective gear when riding your BMX bike, particularly when you're learning a new skill like the Bunny Hop. You will fall while learning and by wearing your protective gear, you can avoid serious or permanent injury.
