How to Upload a Torrent

BitTorrent has become a popular file sharing system, combining the best aspects of server side and peer-to-peer file serving into one system. With a BitTorrent system, a central location keeps a tracker, a small file that contains information about the transferring data and helps coordinate the sharing of the file. Each connected computer simply has to download and activate the file to begin downloading from other connected computers. The first step in this process is to create a tracker.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Client Side

Step1
Arrange the files that you want to upload in an easy-to-find spot, such as your desktop. If you may want to alter or move the files while you share them, make a copy that's for sharing only as any change will invalidate the tracker.
Step2
Open your BitTorrent client and find the "Create New Tracker" option. While every client is different, most have a File menu and an option to create a new tracker within it.
Step3
Select the upload options for your tracker. Most are simple and self-explanatory, but the external tracker option is more difficult. In order to have your torrent indexed online, you must select an external host for your file. Several hosts are available and many of them cross-index, so eventually many places will have access to your torrent.
Step4
Browse to your file or directory and upload.

Server Side

Step1
Browse to the torrent index site that you chose when setting up your tracker.
Step2
Select the "Upload a Torrent" option. All tracking sites have different arrangements but have similar features. The upload option should be prominent somewhere on the main page of the site.
Step3
Upload the tracker that you created earlier.
Step4
Choose a name for your torrent, which is the first thing a downloader sees. Make it as descriptive as possible.
Step5
Add categories and comments to your tracker. These are important as they help downloaders find your torrent and decide if they want it. Torrents in the wrong place or without any information rarely get used.
