One of the fundamental basics of gun ownership is learning to clean your weapon and reassemble it correctly. Not only should you clean your semi-automatic handgun frequently but you should also become familiar with the components.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Semi-automatic pistol
  • Cleaning kit
  1. Step 1

Check to make sure your handgun is unloaded before cleaning. After shooting a clip, don't just assume you shot the last cartridge. Remove the clip and double check the chamber carefully.

  2. Step 2

Pick a well-ventilated spot for cleaning your semi-automatic pistol since you will be using a solvent with strong fumes. An outside table is good. Alternately, open a window if you're indoors.

  3. Step 3

Disassemble your handgun as recommended by the manufacturer. There are numerous ways to take a pistol apart but each manufacturer has a preferred method. After disassembly, you will have 4 basic parts: the slide, the rod, the frame and the spring.

  4. Step 4

Dip the provided swab into the solvent and rub it thoroughly around all the interior parts of the gun: the barrel, the rod and the inside of the frame. This will loosen the accumulated carbon buildup from shooting.

  5. Step 5

Attach a rag swatch from the kit onto the rod and gently push it through the barrel, removing excess solvent. Use a new rag swatch to buff the inside of the barrel clean and dry. Repeat the procedure until the rag swatch comes out of the barrel clean.

  6. Step 6

Wipe down the exterior parts of the handgun and apply a little oil from the kit to the moving parts. Wipe off the excess.

  7. Step 7

Reassemble the semi-automatic and test the action a few times to check for correct alignment.

Tips & Warnings
  • Clean your handgun after every shooting practice and store in a cool dry location.
  • Always follow proper safety procedures when handling a gun.
