One of the first things to try after picking up the mandolin is basic scales. There are 3 basic scales discussed below that are best to begin with, the D, G and A chords. Once you have memorized and perfected the scales, you are ready to move onto simple tunes.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Play a major D chord. Put your first or index finger of your left hand on the second fret on the G string. Leave both the D and A strings open. Place your middle or second finger of your left hand on the second fret of the High E string. Strum all of the strings.

  2. Step 2

Try a major G chord. Play this chord by placing your index or first finger on the second fret of the A string. Place your middle or second finger on the third fret of the E string. Play the G and D strings open. Strum the A, E, G and D strings for this chord.

  3. Step 3

Move on to an A chord. This major chord is played with your first or index finger on the second fret of the G string. Your middle or second finger should be on the second fret of the D string. The A and E strings are played open. Strum the strings to hear an A major chord.

  4. Step 4

Practice all of these chords. They should be played with ease. You should be able to quickly and smoothly change back and forth between these chords before moving onto a song.
