Kickboxing is an excellent way to get in shape, tone the body and learn how to defend yourself. The hook punch is a popular move in kickboxing. The information below will help you learn how to throw a hook punch.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Stand with your feet shoulder width apart and knees slightly bent. Your left foot should be positioned slightly in front of your right foot, with your weight distributed evenly between both legs. Keep your arms tight to your sides to protect your body and increase the speed of the move.

  2. Step 2

Perform a left hook by lifting up the left hand and arm and throwing a punch. The trajectory of the punch should be a slight hook or angle instead of a straight line. As you perform the hook, the left elbow should come up to shoulder height and the shoulder needs to stay in line behind the fist.

  3. Step 3

Lift up the left heel and pivot both the heel and hip as you punch. Use the rotation of your leg and body to add momentum and power to the punch. The entire move should be extremely quick--the faster you move your body, the faster the hook punch.

  4. Step 4

Aim for the jaw, neck or body.

  5. Step 5

Execute the right hook by throwing the punch with the right hand and pivoting the right heel and hip. As you perform the right hook, the right foot should remain positioned farther back than the left foot.

  6. Step 6

Stay loose as you perform the hook punch.

  7. Step 7

Avoid cheating by throwing the hook punch with the arm only. You must put the weight of your body and leg into the punch to achieve maximum power.
