Step 1
Start in a kickboxing stance. You should begin with your feet slightly more than shoulder width apart and one foot forward. Your center should be facing forward and both hand should be up at your guard.
-
Step 2
Lead with the correct foot. When you need to move you should begin the movement with the foot that is in the direction that you're going. For example, if you want to move left, move your left foot leftward and then allow your right foot to follow.
-
Step 3
Swing with the movement. After you move with your lead foot, dip into the movement with your knees and rotate your hips in the direction that you're moving. This keeps your guard closed and your torso in constant movement, making you a more difficult target to hit.
-
Step 4
Shuffle the feet. Beginning a foot shuffle, or "boxer's dance," is a way to stay light on your feet during the kickboxing fight. To shuffle bounce from foot to foot, staying on the toes of either foot and rarely allowing your heels to make full contact with the ground. Work the basic swing and lead foot principles of footwork into the shuffle to keep your footwork effective.

Step 5
Use linear movement. Once you've mastered the beginning techniques of footwork, try linear footwork to move forward and back as a single defensive-offensive unit. Keep your feet shoulder width apart but with one foot forward and one slightly back. As with other footwork, the foot closest to the direction you want to move in should lead the movement.
