Step 1
Use the down forward paddle if you are a beginner. Insert your paddle into the water with the paddle's end perpendicular to the canoe or kayak close to the side of the boat. Push straight back, bringing your paddle up and out of the water as you go.
-
Step 2
Alternate the next stroke on the other side of the canoe or kayak in order to keep the vessel going in a relatively straight line.
-
Step 3
Move the canoe or kayak in reverse by performing the backward stroke. Insert the paddle an arm's length behind your body, perpendicular to the side of the vessel. Push straight forward to send your boat floating backwards.
-
Step 4
Try the J stroke when you are paddling a canoe or kayak by yourself. Insert the paddle in a perpendicular line near the edge of the canoe or kayak. Push the paddle back and slightly out, forming a J curve before bringing the paddle out of the water. This will help you stay in a straight line when paddling alone.
-
Step 5
Reverse the J stroke to paddle backwards when you are alone. This is called the draw stroke and is used in the same way as the backward stroke.
