How to Shoot a Jump Shot in Basketball

Having a jump shot in your arsenal can make you a very successful basketball player. However, it will take practice and dedication to learn this skill. The following steps will tell you how to perform the jump shot, so you to can be a great basketball player.

  1. Step 1

    Put the basketball in your hands in a shooting position. There are many different ways to shoot a basketball. You should shoot the way that is most comfortable to you.

  2. Step 2

    Align your shoulders. If your shoulders are not squarely aligned with the basketball goal, you will not only have an errant shot but you will also not be completing the jump shot correctly.

  3. Step 3

    Place your feet at shoulder width apart and align them so they are both pointing toward the basketball goal. Once again this is a key step in producing a good shot while having the correct form with a jump shot.

  4. Step 4

    Bend your knees. This is the most crucial part of the jump shot. It not only provides leverage for a higher jump, but also allows your shots to go farther when you release, by adding your leg strength behind it.

  5. Step 5

    Jump. When you jump, your legs should straighten, and your arm should shoot the basketball. To be done effectively, it should all be done simultaneously. By jumping, you will be able to shoot over a defender, and produce a high arching shot.

  6. Step 6

    Complete the shot. Your body should consists of straight legs, a straight trunk, and your arm should be in the air from releasing the ball.

  7. Step 7

    Practice the shot daily until you are comfortable enough with it to use the shot in an actual game.
