When someone reaches out and grabs your shoulder from the front, your reaction depends upon the amount of aggression and his intent to do you bodily harm. If you feel you are in a dangerous situation, Kung Fu, a Chinese martial art, offers you several self-defense techniques to allow you to escape from a shoulder grab.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Step in with your right foot if the attacker has grabbed your left shoulder. Your attacker will expect you to pull away so you will gain the element of surprise. As you step, you are pivoting, right shoulder in, and left shoulder out.

  2. Step 2

Grab the hand on your shoulder as you step in with your left hand. Hold it securely; this prevents him from lowering his hand or grabbing your throat.

  3. Step 3

Elbow his face with your right arm. This movment along with those described in Steps 1 and 2 must happen at the same time. Step—grab—elbow; all occur simultaneously. Elbow strikes are damaging, especially when they hit the cheekbone area.

  4. Step 4

Continue your pivot after the elbow strike, bringing your right arm over his extend arm and trapping his arm under your armpit.

  5. Step 5

Grab his hand with your right hand. Both of your hands are now on his hand. Firmly grasp his hand and turn it clockwise, bending wrist sharply forwards. As you rotate the hand, his arm will rotate also, causing him to bend forward. Push his hand forward to control him with a wristlock.

  6. Step 6

Alternate that self-defense technique by skipping the elbow strike but still stepping in with your right foot and pivoting to perform the wristlock.

  7. Step 7

Push your opponent to the ground. This is a very painful position and with pressure, he will collapse.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you feel the attacker is especially violent, you can repeat the elbow strike with the same arm after the first one. The only difference is that you have rotated past his body so the next strike will come from the opposite direction and hit with the back of your elbow.
  • This self-defense technique will allow you to get away from a shoulder grab. Kung Fu offers many self-defense techniques to allow a victim to escape an attacker.
  • Always be aware of your surroundings and remove yourself from situations that are becoming unstable before an altercation occurs.
