How to Escape from a Rear Shirt Grab with Kung Fu

The most common situation in which to experience a rear shirt grab is when you are standing in line or walking. An assailant comes up behind you and reaches out his hand, grabbing the back of your clothing, usually jerking you to a standstill. When this happens, try a couple of Kung Fu self-defense techniques, designed to free you from the attacker.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Gather your senses quickly and step forward with one foot, spreading your weight evenly.

  2. Step 2

    Spin immediately in the opposite direction of the foot you stepped forward with. Spin towards your opponent and strike his cheekbone area with the back knuckles of your closed fist. For instance, if you stepped forward with your right foot, you will spin towards the left and strike with your left fist.

  3. Step 3

    Continue your spinning motion and raise your striking arm over his arm if he is still holding on to your shirt and wrap your arm down and around his—trapping his elbow in a joint lock. From here, you can increase pressure and snap the arm.

  4. Step 4

    Bring your right arm around instead of breaking the assailant's arm and shove on his chest as you hook your leg closest to him behind his leg, causing him to fall backwards over it.

  5. Step 5

    Go to a safe location if there is a chance the attacker will pursue you further.

Tips & Warnings
  • Practice this Kung Fu technique with a friend many, many times, until you react intuitively. Self-defense techniques work only when performed very quickly.
  • Women or smaller victims may find it is easier to step backwards towards their attacker and spin, hitting him with their elbow to escape a rear shirt grab.
  • Pay attention to the moods of others around you. Kung Fu teaches that avoiding an altercation is the best self-defense so be aware of your surroundings.
