When someone comes up from behind you and grabs you in a rear bear hug, pinning your arms to your sides, it can be a frightening experience. However, if you already know some techniques for escaping, you can react quickly. Kung Fu, an ancient Chinese martial art, offers a couple of self-defense techniques to help you escape from a rear bear hug.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Step to the side immediately. Your attacker will need to readjust his balance and you will lower your center of gravity, making your own stance more secure.

  2. Step 2

Shrug and roll your shoulders inwards and upwards at the same instance you step to the side. You will also lift your elbows upwards to shift your assailant's arms upwards and break his grasp. Perform all of those techniques in one swift movement.

  3. Step 3

Elbow backwards into your attacker's solar plexus as soon as you can move your arms. Make your strike very hard. You have a short window of opportunity to disable your attacker and get away. The solar plexus, when struck correctly, will double your attacker over, knocking the air out of him.

  4. Step 4

Hammer with the back of your fist into his groin immediately after you elbow his solar plexus. Both strikes should occur within one single second. Practice with a friend until you can perform them very quickly.

  5. Step 5

Step behind your opponent at this point and push him forward or, alternately, just get to safety. The goal is to create an opportunity for yourself to get away, not to stay and fight.

Tips & Warnings
  • Locate a Kung Fu school and sign up to take self-defense lessons to learn more techniques against common street aggressions.
  • Avoid circumstances where violence is likely to occur. The best self-defense is prevention.
