The front choke is commonly seen in crimes where the assailant wants to subdue or kill his victim quickly. However, unless the attacker is unusually strong or uses his thumbs to collapse the trachea, the victim has a small window of opportunity in which to react. Kung Fu teaches a few self-defense techniques to help the victim of a front choke.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Step back with one foot immediately. This will cause your assailant to step forward to readjust his balance and you will have a solid stance that is slightly lower, making him bend forward. If you're right-handed, step back with your right foot.

  2. Step 2

Grab your attacker's arm. Do this at the same time you step back. You will grab his forearm with your left hand, keeping your hand thumb on top of his arm. Grab firmly.

  3. Step 3

Use your right hand and forming your fingers into a spear position, and drive them forcefully to his throat. The time lapse between your original step back and this strike should be no more than one second. Practice with a friend until you can react that quickly.

  4. Step 4

Bring your right knee upwards and drive it into his groin right after the spear strike to his throat. Your left hand will still be on his arm and you will use it for momentum. Pull in and knee his groin as hard as you can.

  5. Step 5

Get to safety. If your strikes hit their intended targets, your assailant will let go but don't stick around to watch him recover.

Tips & Warnings
  • Switch sides, stepping back with your left foot if you're left handed. You want your strong side back so you can use it for your strikes.
  • Consider taking Kung Fu lessons to learn more self-defense techniques against common street grabs.
