Fielding and throwing a baseball is the very core of America's pastime. There is more to throwing a baseball than just picking it up and hurling it. One of the important, and often overlooked, parts of baseball mechanics is how to grip a baseball. Here are some tips to help you grip a baseball and throw it fast and accurately.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Grip across the seams. This is the four-seam grip, and it is similar to the same way a pitcher throws a four-seam fastball. This grip allows the best spin for accuracy and speed. To grip the ball, hold it so there are two seams running perpendicular to your fingers on top of the ball and two seams running perpendicular to your thumb on the bottom of the ball.

  2. Step 2

Hold the ball with your index finger and middle finger on top and your thumb on bottom. Spread the top two fingers apart slightly with the center of the ball in between your fingers. Your thumb should run across the bottom of the ball in the center. Tuck your other two fingers to the side to keep them from getting in the way.

  3. Step 3

Keep the ball on your fingertips. You do not want the ball to be resting in the back of your hand. Keep your fingers on top of the ball instead of in front of the ball. If you look at the side of your hand while you are holding the ball, there should be a gap between the ball and your hand. This allows you to throw quicker.

  4. Step 4

Practice shifting the ball into the proper position. While playing catch, you can take all of the time you need to grip the ball correctly, but when you are in the midst of trying to throw out a base runner, you do not have the liberty to take your time. Practice feeling the ball in your glove and knowing where the seams are. Then practice fielding ground balls or fly balls and throwing with the proper grip.

Tips & Warnings
  • Younger players with smaller hands may discover that they need to use 3 or all 4 fingers to grip the ball. This is fine; just make sure the ball stays out on the fingertips.
